Description

As part of our event series "Adventures in the Homeland", you will visit the Hüttenhaus in Herdorf on this date.

Those were the days. Herdorf can look back on centuries of iron production and experienced a revival of about 20 years after World War II. The Friedrichshütte was then the most significant employer in the town, providing jobs for well over 1,000 people. The Hüttenhaus remains as a structural reminder, still functioning as a theatre building, which has preserved its unique charisma. Experience a small time travel!

About the Hüttenhaus

The Hüttenhaus is the "good parlor" of the town of Herdorf and an indispensable hub for the diverse cultural activities of Herdorf's clubs.

At the instigation of the culturally interested hut director Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Berndt, the company built a staff house that was intended to serve the various concerns of the employees. In the immediate vicinity of the blast furnaces, the "Hüttenhaus" was created. With the generous equipment of the event hall included in the house, the intention was to give the staff the opportunity to attend theatre performances and musical presentations. The house was inaugurated on May 1, 1954, with the play "Nathan the Wise" by Lessing, in a production by the Ruhrfestspiele Bochum. Stimulated by this performance, the then legal advisor of the Friedrichshütte, former district administrator Werner Zimmermann, suggested opening the house not only for the staff but also for the entire population. For this purpose, the Kulturring Herdorf e.V. was founded in 1954.

After the closure of the Friedrichshütte in 1968, the city acquired the Hüttenhaus to preserve it as a cultural center for the region.
