Description

As part of our event series "Adventures in Home" , you will visit the Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Wissen at this time, which has been restored after the devastating fire in 2023 and has finally been reopened.

The number of participants is limited. Please register!

History and Art in Wissen

Anyone traveling to Wisserland will recognize it from afar by its distinctive pink exterior. Built on a small hill, the Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross has a tumultuous history stretching back over 1000 years, the traces of which we will explore during the approximately 2-hour tour.

The tour begins at the base of the church tower. There, we will learn more about the time of its construction and the origins of the church building. As we circle the building, we will become more familiar with its special architecture and dive into the history of the church square with its famous listed half-moon houses.

Next, we will enter the interior of the church, which has been extensively restored after a severe fire in 2023. The ceiling frescoes by the cathedral painter Peter Hecker are a special highlight here.

Finally, the crowning conclusion is the newly discovered frescoes in the so-called chapter room, which we reach via a spiral staircase.
This tour is accessible except for the stair ascent to the chapter room.

Price

The event of the "Adventure Homeland" series costs 5.00€ for adults and 2.00€ for children up to 12 years old, and is to be paid in cash on-site to the tour guide.
