Requirements

Requirements:

• Safe riding with a bicycle or e-bike, even on narrower paths
• Covering a distance of approximately 40 km with 400–500 meters of elevation gain
• Participation in a guided group tour at a suitable, moderate pace
• Minimum age: 16 years (only with adult supervision for minors)

Trail Conditions:

• mainly side roads, agricultural and field paths
• short sections on low-traffic country roads
• partly gentle inclines and declines, easily manageable with an e-bike
• no technical difficulties or single trails

Recommended Equipment:

• road-safe e-bike (fully charged battery)
• bicycle helmet (mandatory)
• weather-appropriate clothing
• sufficient liquids and possibly a small snack

Important Note:
Participation is at your own risk. Follow the instructions of the tour leaders during the ride!

Payment conditions

Payment is handled by the Kreisvolkshochschule Altenkirchen. As soon as the minimum number of participants has been reached, you will receive specific information about the course.

Description

As part of our event series "Adventure Homeland", we invite you to a special E-Bike Tour: Explore the Westerwald-Sieg region and discover some of the oldest churches in the Altenkirchen district.

On this approximately 40-kilometer route, scenic enjoyment, exercise, and history combine to create a unique experience. On the E-Bike, you will visit the Romanesque churches in Almersbach, Mehren, Birnbach, and Hilgenroth – impressive testimonies of medieval faith and architecture from the 12th to 14th centuries.

Look forward to an exciting journey through time: The historian Dr. Jens Friedhoff will be waiting for you at each station in the historical buildings. You will learn interesting facts about Romanesque architecture, sacred art, regional history, and about the life and beliefs of the people in the Middle Ages.

The following sites will be visited, among others:

• the late Romanesque pillar basilica in Almersbach,
• the Romanesque church in Hilgenroth,
• the three-nave pillar basilica in Birnbach,
• the architecturally notable early Romanesque basilica in Mehren

The tour will be accompanied by the city guides of Altenkirchen, Christine Grabowsky and Günter Imhäuser, who will enrich the route with regional stories and background knowledge.

E-Bike rental: For participants without their own E-Bike, it is possible to rent one for 30€/day from WÄLLERSPORT Altenkirchen.

Price

The event "E-Bike Tour to the Romanesque Churches" of the "Adventure Homeland" series costs 5.00 € for adults and is to be paid in cash on site to the tour guide.

For organizational reasons, no children under 16 years of age are allowed at this event. (For minors, only in accompaniment)
