Detailed description
Hidden in the idyllic valley of the Wied, near the local community of Burglahr, lies a quiet witness of the mining worlds in the Westerwald: the Alvensleben Stollen. Once driven into the rock by miners with hard labor, it today tells of a bygone era in which iron ore mining shaped the life of the region.
The tunnel was established in the mid-19th century and named after the Prussian state minister Alvensleben. Its primary purpose was to drain the mining field "Georg," thus enabling the economic extraction of the sought-after iron ore. It allowed for the controlled diversion of the penetrating mine water – a technical achievement of that time.
Even today, the impressive work of the miners can be sensed: massive support structures, hand-hewn tunnels, and the rough rock tell of a hard life underground. Working in darkness and confinement with lantern light and simple tools, the miners were driven by courage, hope, and the desire for a better life.
Today, the Alvensleben Stollen is a visitor mine and part of the BergbauWanderWeg Burglahr, offering interested visitors an authentic insight into the working world of miners. Guided tours through the tunnel, information panels along the way, and the lovingly restored facilities make the history come alive – for both young and old.
As an official GeoPoint in the National GEOPARK Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus, the Alvensleben Stollen is also part of a nationally recognized network of geological and cultural sights. It connects earth history, industrial culture, and regional identity in particularly impressive ways.
A visit is worthwhile – for all who wish to experience nature, history, and technology up close.
