Barbarian tower

Brief description

Support structure as observation tower

Detailed description

Barbaratower: A panoramic view with history
The Barbaratower on the Steineberger Höhe in Malberg is a remarkable example of community-oriented living. With its fascinating view and a history that reaches far beyond the borders of the Westerwald, it attracts numerous visitors.
Historical Background:
The tower originated in 1941 as a head frame over the western shaft of the lead-zinc ore mine Grund in the Harz Mountains. After the mine was shut down in 1999, it was at risk of ending up in a scrap yard. However, Bernd Mudersbach, owner of Mudersbach GmbH & Co. KG, saved the historic structure from demolition. The tower was stored for 14 years until the Verbandsgemeinde Gebhardshain decided in 2013 to give it a new home and rename it the Barbaratower.
In spring 2014, the 22-meter-high tower received a small shaft house that resembles the original building. Its location is also remarkable – just 500 meters from the historic site of the head frame of the Bindweide mine. In summer 2023, the hoisting system was reassembled, and its original parts – such as the rope drum and the control station – were lovingly reconstructed. Only the massive wooden chair of the hoisting machinist is new, creating a charming connection to the working world of past days.
View and Recreation:
Today, the Barbaratower is not a hoisting site anymore, but a meeting point for hikers and nature lovers. Adjacent to the impressive Druidensteig, it offers a breathtaking panoramic view after 96 steps: The expansive view reaches over parts of the Eifel, the Hunsrück, and as far as the Siebengebirge. Information and maps help visitors to orient themselves and discover the beauty of the surrounding area. Experience a small journey through time as you enjoy the impressive view from the Barbaratower. The Barbaratower not only stands for a vibrant history but is also an example of civic engagement that promotes a livable community and creates a unique place for recreation and meeting.
