Directions

On the heights around the Marienthaler Bachtal, which were formerly dominated by spruce forests, a new generation of forest is gradually developing. Your route begins at the parking lot in front of the former Marienthal Monastery. From here, a winding path leads you uphill to the Stations of the Cross on the Calvary Hill above the monastery. Along the way, there is a beautiful view of the monastery and the village of Marienthal. The route continues over well-maintained paths and smaller trails through the silence of the former spa forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. In some sections, the babbling of the Marienthaler Bach accompanies you. After a hike through open forest regeneration areas, there is a moderate descent into the Lohmühlbachtal. Here, the Klosterdorfweg meets the WesterwaldSteig. Along the paved Lohmühlenweg, you walk back to the starting point over gentle terrain. In the monastery village of Marienthal, with the pilgrimage church and the former Franciscan monastery, various restaurants offer the opportunity to enjoy regional dishes with distinction. The monastery also houses an external branch of the registry office of Hamm (Sieg).

Safety instructions

In the winter months, wood logging work on certain sections of the trails may affect the trail quality. If you believe certain trail sections are impassable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural trails can be muddy and slippery in places. In autumn, pay attention to fallen leaves as they can conceal uneven ground, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You should expect such trail impairments when hiking. Although the trail is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.
