Baroque building with impressive ceiling and dome paintings.
The largest church in Wissen shines as a baroque jewel in the heart of the city and is widely visible due to its distinctive tower with a bell-shaped dome. However, inside reveals a very special artwork: the impressive ceiling and dome paintings by Peter Hecker, painted from 1928 to 1931, now his largest still-preserved ensemble. Scenes from Genesis can be seen in the flat ceiling of the nave, the Passion of Christ follows in the dome, and the glorification of God dominates in the choir – a total work of art that harmoniously connects architecture and pictorial tradition. Under the dome, four striking image fields narrate the Passion, including the scene where Christ collapses under the weight of the cross – powerful, intense, moving.
Due to a fire in 2023, significant damage was caused to the Catholic Church in Wissen, which has not yet been fully repaired.
The church will therefore remain closed for the time being!
