Mining Museum Herdorf

Brief description

Show mine and GeoInformation Center

Detailed description

An impressive testament to the centuries-long mining tradition in the Siegerland! Housed in a former school building, it takes visitors deep into the tumultuous history of regional ore extraction – from the early artisanal beginnings to the industrial peak. The focus is not only on the ore but also on the people who worked under the harshest conditions in the darkness of the earth.

Numerous exhibition rooms display authentic tools, machines, pit lamps, minerals, and documents from over two millennia of mining history. The collection includes finds from local mining as well as an impressive collection of rocks and ores. A special highlight is the reconstructed show mine in the basement of the museum. Here, visitors experience firsthand what it feels like to work in a narrow tunnel – with real rock, original sounds, typical lighting, and historical tools. The smell of ore, the dim light of the pit lamps, and the sound of drilling hammers create a realistic impression of everyday life underground.

Outside, a real shaft tower with a machine house enhances the experience. Large equipment from ore processing, including machines from the former Charlottenhütte, also provide insight into the industrial dimension of mining. A lovingly arranged children's area with play stations and stereo microscopes sparks curiosity about geology and technology even among young guests.

The museum is one of the ten GeoInformation Centers in the GEOPARK Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus and makes the connection between history and technology visible in a unique way. Regular special exhibitions, family-friendly offerings, workshops, holiday events, and thematic tours make the visit a special experience for young and old alike. Children's birthdays and group tours are also offered upon request with an educational concept.

Here, history is not just told – it is felt. Those who visit the museum sense the pride and solidarity of an entire region deeply rooted in the rock.
