The Mining Museum of the Altenkirchen District in Herdorf-Sassenroth is a fascinating destination for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the history of mining in the Westerwald and Siegerland. Housed in a former school building, the museum impressively showcases centuries of regional mining history – from the early beginnings of ore extraction to the industrial heyday.

In numerous exhibition rooms, you will find authentic tools, pit lamps, machines, minerals, and documents from over 2,000 years of mining history. The focus is not only on the valuable ores but especially on the people who risked their lives in the hard daily grind underground.

A special highlight is the replica show mine in the basement. On a tour, you experience firsthand how narrow, dark, and impressive the workplace of the miners was – accompanied by typical sounds, light, and real rock layers. This is how history comes alive and is palpable at the mining museum.
