Detailed description

The Synagogue Square in Hamm (Sieg)

Since the 17th century, there has been a Jewish community in Hamm. In 1938, the SA burned down the synagogue during the Reich Pogrom Night and deported the last Jews to the concentration camps Buchenwald and Dachau.

Next to the former Jewish cemetery, which has been protected as a historical monument since 1985, the local community of Hamm remembers the murdered Jewish fellow citizens with the KulturHausHamm at the newly redesigned Synagogue Square. The renovated old building is the former residence of the Jewish family David, situated in close proximity to the destroyed synagogue, whose floor plan is simplified and represented by the laid pavement. Excavations also revealed and uncovered the remains of a medieval Jewish bath.
