Exhibition & guided tour of the visitor mine
Welcome! The Bindweide Mine Museum warmly welcomes you and the mining team to an underground discovery tour – exciting, impressive, and adventurous, ideal for young and old.
The Bindweide Mine Museum offers a unique journey through time. The visitor center in the above-ground area of the mine museum presents a museum educational experience that makes tangible what becomes reality underground. Visitors take a mine train 800 meters into the mountain, followed by 300 meters on foot. In the ore veins, they feel the historical significance of mining, complemented by reddish-brown ore-bearing rocks as well as stalactites and stalagmites. The tour of the Bindweide Mine Museum lasts 90 minutes and is accompanied by historical sounds of old tools. The fresh, humid air at around 12 °C creates an authentic atmosphere – ideal for sustainable educational and experiential values of the mine museum.
Location: The Bindweide Mine Museum is located in Steinebach/Sieg. Above the entrance to the deep mine shaft, through which iron ore was once extracted, the Bindweide Mine Museum was established. Until 1913, iron ore was transported through this shaft. Since 1986, the Bindweide Mine Museum has been open and delights thousands of visitors every year. In 2019, Mayor Bernd Brato welcomed the 400,000th visitor with the mining team.
Attractions of the Bindweide Mine Museum: The Healing Shaft: Breathing and relaxation therapies in the former powder chamber. The Mine Smithy: Outdoor area with blacksmith demonstrations – living craftsmanship in the mine museum. The Barbaraturm: Hoisting tower as an observation tower near Steineberger Höhe, about 2 kilometers from the mine museum. Mining and Forest Experience Trail: The forest educational trail will be expanded in 2021 to become the mining and forest experience trail, leading to the Barbaraturm.
Visitor Center with Museum of the Iron Ore Mine Bindweide:After modernization in 2013, the Bindweide Mine Museum now offers a modern visitor center with multimedia stations on the geology of the Westerwald and ore formation. Other sections guide visitors through the path of ores from the mine through processing to the end product; the history of mining and the work in mining are vividly presented – including the mining disaster that killed 14 miners.
Museum Education and Funding: The mine museum program follows a museum educational concept. More information at www.qr-kultur.de; teaching materials on ore mining.
Funding:The visitor center, the mine smithy, and the Barbaraturm were funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development "EAFRD". GeoInformation Center and Partnerships: The Bindweide Mine Museum is one of ten GeoInformation centers in the GeoPark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus. Here, visitors find geology, economic and cultural history of the GeoPark as well as information on other stations, GeoRoutes, GeoPoints, GeoTope, and GeoViews (www.geopark-wlt.de). The History of the Bindweide Iron Ore MineThe Bindweide Mine was one of the largest iron ore mines in the Siegerland-Westerwald region. As early as 1837, the mining area was granted as “Maria an der Bindweide”; in 1872, the world-renowned Essen steel and mining company Alfred Krupp acquired the mine. After a serious mining accident that killed 14 miners, the mine was closed. Over 5 million tons of iron ore were extracted in the following years; up to 900 miners worked here. Due to various technical problems and the declining demand for iron ore during the Great Depression, the company Alfred Krupp in Essen decided to close the mine. The final closure took place at the end of March 1932.
For a long time, the mine was still referred to as a reserve mine, but extraction was never resumed.
The Bindweide Mine - an adventurous journey to the treasures of the earth
