Description

From the station in Marienthal with its namesake monastery, the WesterwaldSteig takes you via the Way of the Cross. Through an extensive forest area, you reach the forest edge after just under 2 kilometers and look to the right at the small village of Hilgenroth. On the left is Obererbach, where you can later start your return journey. Along meadow paths past forest edges, you reach the next forest section, which soon gives you a clear view of the Raiffeisen Tower. From here you have a magnificent view over the Bergisches Land, the Siebengebirge, and the Altenkirchen area far into the Westerwald. From the Raiffeisen Tower, you walk back along the WesterwaldSteig to the junction where a connecting path leads you to Obererbach station.

ATTENTION:
From 01.05. to 01.09.2024 on weekends, train cancellations and rail replacement service RB 90 occur between Altenkirchen and Westerburg. DB InfraGO cannot staff the signal boxes in Nistertal, Hachenburg, and Ingelbach on weekends and holidays during this period, causing train cancellations between Altenkirchen and Westerburg. Canceled trains are replaced by buses. The substitute stops for the rail replacement service are not located at all stations immediately by the platforms; please observe the signage at the platforms and the passenger information of the Hessische Landesbahn.

Parking

Use parking facilities at the stations!

Directions

The connecting path from Marienthal station (request stop!) to the main path is about 500 m long. Please note that from the Raiffeisen Tower you walk back the same way along the WesterwaldSteig to Obererbach, from where a connecting path of about 1.4 km leads to Obererbach station. The junction to the station is located on K52.

The connecting paths are marked with a green "W" on a yellow background and the signposts have a yellow arrow tip.

Safety instructions

  • If you consider certain sections impassable, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.
  • In autumn, be aware that fallen leaves may hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. Such impediments should be expected during a hike.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map or download the free app "Rheinland-Pfalz erleben" .

Equipment

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
  • Take enough fluids with you. There are not always opportunities to stop for refreshments.
  • Please wear suitable hiking shoes that provide good grip even on slippery, steep, rocky, and uneven paths.

Tips

Park your car at the destination (Obererbach station) and first take the train to the start of your route. Then you can relax and walk back without any time pressure.
