We Westerwald and Siegerland residents love hiking ourselves - which is why we particularly appreciate well-maintained and well-marked hiking trails. In addition to the WesterwaldSteig, Natursteig Sieg and Druidensteig long-distance hiking trails, we have created a colourful range of new circular hiking trails especially for all those who also love hiking. The Sieg adventure trails and the Kleine Wäller promise hiking fun for young and old in the Westerwald-Sieg holiday region. There are also many other well-signposted hiking trails in the Westerwald and along the Sieg with magnificent panoramic views, exciting sights and great places to stop for refreshments along the way.

For example, you can explore the Druidenstein on the Druidenstein circular hiking trail, while the Otto Tower takes centre stage on the circular hiking trail of the same name. The botanical trail or the chapel trail are also popular hiking trails that invite you to spend a relaxing day in the natural surroundings of the Westerwald. The GeoRoutes of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark lead to the geological highlights of our region. In Wisserland, you can learn more about the stream of the same name on the educational stream trail near Selbach or explore the idyllic Holperbach Valley on the circular hike from Holschbach. You can encounter old mills on the circular mill trail near Dickendorf or at Freusburger Mühle. The Marienwanderweg trail between Marienthal and Marienstatt is a centuries-old pilgrimage route that still attracts many pilgrims today. Various paths cross in the idyllic monastery village of Marienthal, which you can also combine with each other. Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2023 in Westerwald-Sieg

2nd place for the Auenlandweg in the day tour category

The champagne corks popped at the Naturregion Sieg and the Altenkirchen district administration: the Auenlandweg in Wisserland took second place in the "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail" poll in the day tours category. In the vote organised by the hiking magazine, the Auenlandweg was only beaten by the Heimatspur Wasserfall-Erlebnisroute in the Volcanic Eifel. In total, over 45,000 hiking fans voted online and offline in two categories.

The Auenlandweg received 3,732 votes, the waterfall adventure route received 6,416 and the third-placed "Traumschleife Lecker Pfädchen" in the Hunsrück region received 3,139 votes. A total of 15 hiking routes were up for election in the day tour category nationwide. The award ceremony took place on Wednesday (16 August 2023) in Bad Bertrich (Cochem-Zell district), where the winning trail starts.

"We are absolutely thrilled, especially because we beat off competition from top tourist destinations such as the Black Forest and the Alpine foothills. A big thank you to everyone who voted, but also to the team from the Sieg Nature Region and the Altenkirchen district administration, who never tired of putting their heart and soul into promoting the Auenlandweg and collecting votes, no matter what the occasion," says Gabi Wäschenbach from the Altenkirchen district administration, who attended the award ceremony.
