“The end of an era” Special exhibitions on the closure of the last mines 60 years ago

“The end of an era” - this is also the title of two special exhibitions at the district mining museum in Herdorf-Sassenroth, which commemorate this historic time. From Sunday, April 13, the first exhibition is entitled “Füsseberg-Friedrich Wilhelm mine - minerals and more”. The exhibition on the “Georg” mine will follow in the fall.

When the first ships carrying cheap ore from Brazil docked in the port of Duisburg in the 1960s, the fate of the Sieg, Heller and Wied mines was finally sealed. 2500 years of ore mining were history - the end of an era. Exactly 60 years ago, on March 31, 1965, “Füsseberg-Friedrich Wilhelm” in Daaden-Biersdorf and “Georg” in the Siegerland iron ore district were the last to be shut down.

“Füsseberg-Friedrich Wilhelm” was the largest mine in the Altenkirchen district with over 1000 employees at times and a depth of 1200m. On display are minerals, mine and site plans of the mines on the Florz-Füsseberger Gangzug (Wolf/Friedrich Wilhelm/Einigkeit/Füsseberg/Glaskopf) as well as numerous rare historical photographs of the history and mine closure.

Museum director Achim Heinz: "As so often, the new exhibition was conceived by Thomas Düber. He was supported by Alfons Bender, Michael Bender (local history working group in the Westerwaldverein Daaden) and Carsten Trojan. In addition, well-known collectors provided top minerals. They have never been exhibited like this before, a presentation with rarity value. The mining museum is increasingly developing into a forum for people who present our regional history with commitment and expertise."

The special exhibition can be seen every Sunday and public holiday from April 13 from 11 am to 5 pm. Expert guided tours - also at other times - are possible by appointment.
Register for this at the Mining Museum on tel. 02744-6389.

Thalhausermühle forest swimming pool: partial opening from July 10, 2025

Update on the Thalhausermühle forest swimming pool (03.07.25): Partial opening of the leisure and non-swimmer area. After construction work in the pool area, nothing stands in the way of recreational and children's pool fun. Splashing around in the water playground, climbing adventures on the play ship, a round of beach volleyball or a soccer tournament and perhaps enjoying a cold drink or an ice cream... despite the main swimming area still being closed, all of this will be possible again from next week, July 10, 2025 in the popular natural pool in Hamm (Sieg).

“Siegtal pur”: Proven concept with a few innovations

Siegburg/Betzdorf/Siegen/Netphen. Cleaned and oiled the chain? The saddle adjusted and enough air in the tires? If you can put a tick behind these questions, you should have already marked July 6 in your calendar - unless you don't like being out and about and certainly not in company. Because on this Sunday, “Siegtal pur”, the region's big cycling event, will attract thousands of cyclists and inline skaters to the federal and state roads. They will once again have free rein along the Sieg - through the Rhineland, Westerwald and Siegerland. And in keeping with its 50th anniversary, the Siegen-Wittgenstein district will also be taking part again this time, meaning that participants in the three districts of SI, AK and SU will have a route of around 110 kilometers at their disposal.

Siegtal pur 2025 - Three districts are ready

Siegburg/Altenkirchen/Siegen. Two is good, but sometimes three is definitely better: at least that's true for Siegtal pur. After the Siegen-Wittgenstein district did not take part in the big cycling event last year for financial reasons, the three districts will once again be the full line-up of organizers in 2025. This means that from Siegburg via Betzdorf to Netphen, around 115 kilometers of the Siegtal will once again belong to cyclists and inline skaters on Sunday, 6 July.
