The Protestant Baroque church in Daaden, built from 1722 to 1724, shapes the townscape and is considered one of the most significant Baroque churches in the Westerwald. With around 1200 seats, it is one of the largest churches in the Rhineland. It replaced a Romanesque predecessor church from the 12th century, whose tower has been preserved, but was raised in 1784 and fitted with a Baroque onion dome.
A special feature is the weather vane in the shape of an angel, which replaced an earlier one in 1931. The dispute over angel or rooster earned the people of Daaden the nickname “Hahnengler”. Three bells hang in the tower, including an original midday bell from 1785 – two others were replaced by cast steel bells after World War II.
The church building is cross-shaped and impresses with two-story galleries and a magnificent arrangement of altar, pulpit, and organ. Particularly striking is the pulpit adorned with fruit pendants and angel heads, framed by Corinthian columns. The organ above, a work of the organ builder Röver (1908), is a rare romantic-pneumatic organ in nearly original condition.
The originally preserved church pews are simple but artistically carved. Seating was once arranged according to social standing and origin – a tradition that no longer applies today but is still partially known. Until 1788, burials took place inside the church, including those of nobles.
In 1975, the house of worship had to be closed due to construction damage. The roof and ceiling were faithfully reconstructed the following year, including the Baroque stucco elements.
