Anyone visiting the northernmost district of the Westerwald will discover a region steeped in history and home to impressive reminders of centuries past. Nestled in the wooded countryside near Friesenhagen lies Crottorf Castle, one of the most beautiful moated castles in the Westerwald. The 16th-century complex captivates visitors with its Baroque architecture, its towers and its extensive grounds. Although the castle is privately owned, there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed all around it, offering views of the impressive castle setting – a photo opportunity not to be missed.
Friedewald Castle near Daaden impressively blends history and the present. Originally built as a fortress in the Middle Ages, the complex was later converted into a castle and is now a popular venue for events, exhibitions and cultural gatherings. Visitors can stroll through the castle grounds and enjoy the special atmosphere of this historic complex.

Perched high above the River Sieg stands Freusburg Castle, one of the oldest surviving castles in the Westerwald. Its mighty walls and striking keep bring history to life. Today, the castle houses a youth hostel and is also an exciting destination for young and old alike. From the terrace, there is a breathtaking view across the Sieg Valley – particularly atmospheric at sunset.
Lahr Castle near Burglahr is a real hidden gem for castle enthusiasts. It is picturesquely situated above the Wied Valley and impresses with the way it blends harmoniously into the natural surroundings. After a walk along the surrounding paths, it’s well worth making a detour to the castle, which, with its historic charm and peaceful setting, invites you to linger.

Not far from the borders of the Altenkirchen district, the ruins of Reichenstein Castle in the Puderbach region are a real gem of medieval history. Nestled between ancient walls and dense woodland, you can sense the spirit of times gone by – perfect for a short trip off the beaten track in the Westerwald-Sieg region. The view from the hills around Reichenstein is well worth it, as is a detour to the other castles in the area.
