Detailed description

Nestled in the gentle hills of the Westerwald, Betzdorf is a charming town in the Altenkirchen district of Rhineland-Palatinate, with a lively past. In the 19th century, the once quiet village transformed into a central traffic hub with the construction of the Cologne-Deutz–Giessen railway line and the connection to Siegen (1861). Especially the transport of iron ore from nearby mines gave the town economic significance.

With the rise of the railway, a large repair works and numerous railway facilities were established, shaping the town's appearance and providing many people with jobs. Although a large portion of these facilities was shut down in the 1950s, Betzdorf remained an important regional traffic junction.

Today, Betzdorf presents itself as a city in transition: well connected to the regional railway network, modernized, and future-oriented. Particularly exciting is the development on the site of the former repair works: a new urban district is emerging here – a place for living, working, and shopping. Visitors can expect an attractive combination of historical industrial culture and modern urban development.
