Baroque building with impressive ceiling and dome paintings.
The largest church in Wissen shines as a Baroque jewel in the heart of the city and is widely visible due to its distinctive tower with a curved roof. However, inside reveals a very special artwork: the impressive ceiling and dome paintings by Peter Hecker, painted from 1928–1931, today his largest still preserved ensemble. Scenes from Genesis can be seen in the flat ceiling of the nave, in the dome, the Passion of Christ follows, and in the choir, the glorification of God dominates – a total work of art that harmoniously combines architecture and pictorial tradition. Under the dome, four striking image fields depict the Passion, such as the scene where Christ collapses under the weight of the cross – powerful, intense, moving.
Due to a fire in 2023, significant damage occurred in the Catholic Church in Wissen, which has since been completely repaired, allowing it to reopen on March 19, 2026.
