Neugrünebacher Hütte

Detailed description

The Neugrünebach Ironworks was founded in 1738 on the River Heller and is an impressive testimony to iron smelting in the Westerwald. Originally operated jointly by 50 tradesmen, it utilised regional iron ore, charcoal and water power. Over the centuries, the operation was modernised - with steam engines, the use of coke and a railway connection. The ironworks was known for its particularly pure speciality pig iron, which was produced with great precision in small quantities. After its closure in 1963, the historic blast furnace was preserved and is now a listed building.
